After a bit of a break to recover from the #glasgowwhiskyfestival weekend, time to get back to my regular blog schedule with this review of @torabhaig_distillery Cnoc Na Moine, the third chapter of the Legacy series. Peat, brine and just a touch of Sherry fruity sweetness in the glass and a lot of welcome transparency on the packaging.

One thing that makes me hopeful when I look at new

One thing that makes me hopeful when I look at new distilleries, even in the current industry climate, is their ability to be innovative in their approach to the business side of things if not the production. For example, today’s distillery, Glenwyvis, has an innovative approach to community ownership. A bonus is the quality in their still young but up-and-coming 2019 release I am reviewing today.

In a purely coincidental way, today’s review in my new distilleries series covers the 2024 @onlinescotchwa beat new distilleries winners, @raasaydistillery. It’s time to look at Isle of Raasay’s Hebridean Single Malt, in its R-02.1 release. Beside the congratulations for the win, they deserve some more for creating a single malt with a unique character at the core of their lineup (and yes I do like those Rye cask notes quite a bit).

Continuing on the theme of trying out “old” new whisky from new distilleries which take time to get to markets outside the UK, I try out Lochlea’s Fallow First Crop, still widely available here in Italy. (As I write @lochleawhisky has just announced the upcoming release of the Third Crop). While it has a few things that make me curious to try Lochlea again with some extra age, it does bring me back to “the new distillery dilemma”: how do you balance the need to generate revenues while not burning the goodwill of whisky enthusiasts with premature releases? As much as I am rooting for Lochlea to succeed, this is too young for me… but I am still looking forward to what’s to come from Lochlea.

There is a bit of a dilemma when us outside the UK want to review new distilleries - due to distribution, market size and more, we often end up having access to new releases later if at all. That’s what was on my mind when I decided to review the now discontinued @kingsbarnsdistillery #dreamtodram. Does it make sense to review something that already has been replaced (by the Doocot)? And then I listened to @_dramface colonial commoners episode 2 and I felt reassured that I am not the only one experiencing this delayed exposure to new whiskies 😊. Today I keep exploring “new” distilleries with a review a trio of @1770whisky Small Batch Series bottlings from 2022 through 2024. I think I might have just found a new favourite series 😍. From the bright and complex 2022 Red wine/Ruby Port, passing by the cigar lounge atmosphere of the 2023 Manzanilla and finishing on a maybe divisive, confectionery and floral notes laden Tokaji from 2024, I am in whisky bliss… now if only we could get broader European distribution 😉.

With so many new distilleries releasing their products on the market, it is time to dedicate my next reviews to the New Malts on the Block. As an enthusiastic whisky fan, seeing new distilleries come of age one of the most exciting things happening on the scene.
I am starting the series reviewing the Clydeside Distillery Napier, a 6 year old Lowlands single malt fully aged in Oloroso Sherry Casks. If you like Sherrie’s whiskies with a rich red fruit and spice backbone, this will hit the spot.

I am closing off my series of posts on whisky travel in Scotland with a shout-out to three great shops which would make any whisky geek feel like a kid in a candy store and taken care of by the great staff. While I am sure locals and frequent travellers to Scotland will know them well, I hope these suggestions will be useful to the less travelled or experienced ones among us.

A big thanks to @thegoodspiritsco, Oban whisky and Fine Wines and @tyndrumwhisky for being who you are… if I didn’t have to drive 2000km or so to get there, I would be a regular 😊.

Bruichladdich was a “new” reborn distillery when I started getting into whisky. While it may not be the hot new thing it was back then, it remains a firm favourite for both product quality and, to quote the distillery itself, a “Progressive” approach to production.

So, before returning to Italy I could not miss the chance to participate in the Bruichladdich experience combining tour and warehouse tasting with some incredible cask samples which will stay in my memory for a long time!

The top pick by far was @bunnahabhain Warehouse 9 tasting. With so many endorsements, it would have been a crime to miss the opportunity to sample some of the unique casks on offer.

Once on Arran it would be criminal not to visit both distilleries 😁. So after my post on Lagg, today is @arranwhisky Lochranza’s turn with the Select Tasting. I certainly have been guilty of liking the standard lineup from this distillery to the point of almost forgetting about their special releases.

The Select Tasting is a great opportunity to explore that part of Arran’s range. When I was there we sampled the following:
Arran signature series 1 - Remnant Renegade
Arran 11 yo Single cask ex-oloroso
A very unique “2nd fill Sherry” hand fill, which was much more than the name suggests
Arran signature series 2 - Barrel Bonfire
Machrie Moor Fingal’s Cut Sherry finish

I usually try to be objective and not let my emotions condition what I write too much. I am afraid that with @laggwhisky, I have lost that fight.

The beautiful distillery would be worth a visit just for the architecture. Tasting the whisky, assuming you are a peat lover, will excite you and make you keep an eye on what the future holds for Lagg. But ultimately, the success of a distillery visit depends on its people. The friendly, knowledgeable, passionate staff at Lagg made my tour a special experience.

If you are on Arran, and you love whisky, just take the time and visit Lagg. You won’t regret it.

I am rounding up my short Irish “vacation” wit

I am rounding up my short Irish “vacation” with today’s review of the Green Spot Chateau Leoville Barton. It’s an intriguing example of Single Pot Still whiskey and red wine cask use. Definitely one more aimed at those, like me, who enjoy this type of cask finish.

The short break has been fun and it has left me wanting to explore some more outside Scotland’s malts. I will certainly keep my eyes on Ireland. With tens of new distilleries on the way, the Irish whiskey scene could have lots to say in the future.
